In an informal office poll, colleagues were asked what images came to mind when one said Mother’s Day.
The answers were as follows: breakfast in bed, flowers, jewelry, flowers again and chocolates. When then asked what was associated with the word Mother, the following descriptions were provided; Always there for you, nurturing, funny, caring, compassionate, and advice-giver.
“Always there for you” was one that was particularly struck me. In world where nothing seems certain, the love of a mother seemed to be something everlasting. I began to wonder if the qualities of a mother were the most valuable commodity our culture has and wondered if we could systematically recognize this if our economy could thrive again.
